地球形成至今約有45億5000萬年之久, 依照我們目前對行星形成的了解, 要指出地球具體的形成時間, 不易得知, 因為地球的產生是結合了彗星、隕石、小行星、 小行星體、塵埃和氣體等的剩餘產物, 這些老恆星在耗盡它們的能量時, 也產生了其他的元素, 這些元素不同於在恆星系晚期因爆裂核反應所產生的氦氣和氫氣, 這些物質的聚集是經過一段漫 長的累積過程, 才有地球的誕生。距今有45億至50億年之久的星雲, 是由太陽系中的星塵不斷累積而形成團狀(又稱星雲或分子雲), 最後大部份的物質, 在太陽中聚成一堆。
在太陽接近形成的最後階段, 行星可能已經存在了, 因為太陽在吸收質量時, 會愈變愈 熱, 當它釋放出物質時, 溫度會略降, 所以太陽系在溫度下降時, 行星可能部份形成，依據克萊爾·卡梅倫·帕特森（Clair Cameron Patterson）的判定, 物質的聚合濃縮開始於44億 8000萬年至46億2000萬年前, 愈接近太陽, 較重的化合物和原子聚成一團, 距離太陽愈遠, 就形成薄冰(除了結冰的水之外, 也有結冰的氨和甲烷)。 太陽系形成的初期, 在重力作用之下, 把周圍的物質吸引在一起, 小行星也在繞太陽旋轉時互相產生碰撞, 在原 行星盤裡, 正當這些行星和月球利用環繞新生太陽的軌道運行, 聚合並濃縮周遭的物質, 而產生吸積作用的同時, 地球有可能在這個過程當中, 已經存在好幾百萬年了。
