Visit to a classroom in the School of Western Studies.

In the morning of May 16th Zhihong invited me to come to her class, and I was glad to come over.

Earlier in the morning I finished grading student work for the Spring 2012 semester and turned in grades.

During mid-day after my visit to the classroom Zhihong and a friend took me to lunch. Later in the afternoon when I came back to my apartment I met my neighbors from across the hall.

Zhi Hong among her students. We discussed the role of education and what the goals of education should be. We also discussed cultural influences across cultures: for example, students told me about their experiences with American culture. I had a lot of fun, and I think the students were enjoying the time.

Some students asked my opinions about freedom and also education, so I mentioned the 26th article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace.

We had lunch with Zhi Hong’s friend after the class.

Here is a view from the window of the apartment. You look across the western edge of the Heilongjiang University campus. For lunch we had these delicious leek dumplings. Tofu, tomatoes, and cucumbers complimented the outstanding dumplings. The window in the apartment. Such an inspiring view.

I had a great time visiting the class, and I hope to visit several more classes while I am here.
