Walk west of Heilongjiang University campus on May 15th in Harbin.

On May 15th I went for a walk east of campus. It was a long walk: I left my apartment at 4:00 p.m. and returned just before 7:00 p.m. I had no map, but knew generally that the botanical gardens were east of campus, and not too far away, so I explore around until I found them.

Planting trees and bushes in the park near the Heilongjiang University staff and faculty residences of the Zhuzhailou Unit. A poster suggesting that good human housing should blend human culture with nature. The sign says we constantly seek tranquility in Harbin. Difficult to do with the traffic in its present state, but we try.

New housing areas south of the botanical gardens. Spring flowers in the botanical garden. The west side of Haping Road has this unit of the garden, which is closed to the public.

Fields in the western section of the botanical garden, with the Zhuzhailou Unit housing towers in the background. Nice late afternoon clouds over the spring green forest. As the construction around the Zhuzhailou Unit isn’t complete, the area still looks pretty squalid and full of trash, but it will be clean and beautiful in some months, after the construction is finished.

Amusing trash can. Another amusing trash can. Some deer statues on the grounds of the Harbin University of Science and Technology’s South Quarter.

It was a fairly long walk, and I returned to my apartment about 1 hour and 45 minutes after setting out. At this point in my stay (my fifth full day in China) I was over my jet lag, but I found that in general I was sleepy and ready for bed by 8:00 or 9:00 p.m., and it was difficult to stay asleep in bed after 5:00 a.m. All of China has just one time zone, and we are pretty far to the east of the country, so with darkness falling around 8:00 p.m. and light getting bright around 4:30 a.m., this is perhaps normal.
