Chocolate eggs and decorative bunny rabbits were displayed in shop windows all over Strasbourg in March and April. Here are rabbits and chicks to celebrate life and fertility. They probably taste delicious.

We enjoyed an afternoon visit to the Parc de la Citadelle, a modern (created in 1964) park on the site of one of the major fortifications constructed in the 1680s under the direction of Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban We vsited the citadel park on Sunday the 8th of March, and the weather was sunny and mild. The park was full of families and people of all ages. Many of the children were playing with soccer balls. The street markets in Strasbourg in the days leading up to Easter offered everyone opportunities to purchase cute decorations for the season. This little lamb, in particular, caught my eye.

There were so many cute children and families in the park on this mild day in early March. People seemed to be enjoying the start of spring weather, but as we had been living in Taiwan until a few days earlier, it felt very cold to us. The Saint Paul Church in Strasbourg was constructed as a German cathedral. Strasbourg was part of the Holy Roman Empire (and thus, one might say, “Germanic”) until Louis XIV forced it to join his French Empire. The city had a German administration again from 1871-1918, and then was occupied by German Fascists from 1940-1944. Strasbourg has a very large university, and feels like a university town in some respects. This observatory is in the botanical gardens, which we visited on the 8th of March.

This is a willow tree in the Parc Eugéne IMBS, which was only a few meters away from our apartment. On the 26th of March we returned to Strasbourg to find spring well established, with daffodils in bloom. Here is a willow tree in the Citadel Park, ready for the buds to burst into leaf on March 8th. Everyone was having fun in the Parc de la Citadelle. The park is quite close to the university, and many young people or young families seemed attracted to the pleasant landscape.

In late March the Forsythia was gloriously in bloom, and the magnolias of Strasbourg came into full flower. Here is a bridge that crosses a stream flowing into the Ill River very near our apartment. On March 8th it was warm enough for people to stand in line to get a taste of some ice cream.

The Place Kléber, named after one of Napoleon’s brilliant Alsacian generals. The southeast corner of the Place Kléber, with the spires of the Cathedral looming to the right, and the Eglise du Temple Neuf on the left. Riding our bikes along the Ill on our way to the shopping mall or the south side of town, we sometimes would pass this building, which is a Holiday Inn hotel.

As we wanted to be able to take our bikes out of the town, we were looking for a way to purchase inexpensive used bikes, and so we were glad to see this sign teling us about a bike market. On the 29th of March, Arthur and I went out to Mosheim to purchase bicycles. We were able to get a couple excellent bikes for slightly over 200 Euros in total. We saw a few demonstrations as well as some celebrations in the streets of Strasbourg. The first demonstration we encountered was an anti-nuclear march.

Boat near the Bassin de la Citadelle. We beheld the Eglise Saint Arbogast Montagne Verte with affection regard. Its chimes reminded us of the time, and every evening at 7:00 we enjoyed a few minutes of bell-ringing. Inside one of the greenhouses in the Strasbourg Botanical Garden there are murals depicting the seasons. Here one can see winter.
