On our way to Haut-Koenigsbourg we passed through the village of Kintzheim, and enjoyed some sunlight after driving through thick fog and gloomy mist. Haut-Koenigsbourg was reconstructed by German nationalists and historians in the first decade of the 20th century. It is an impressive and imposing sight. A view from Haut-Koenigsbourg.

Haut-Koenigsbourg with a view toward the east and Germany (the hills on the horizon are the German side of the Rhine Valley). This is a statue of a German knight in a courtyard in Haut-Koenigsbourg.

A dragon decorating the ceiling of a room inside the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle.
Looking out a window to see the colorful roof of a tower. I like these old windows.

When we left Haut-Koenigsbourg we drove through several Alsacian villages. The villages of Alsace have many lovely architectural details.
Some of the villages of Alsace were walled for defense.

We saw many wayside crucifixes as we drove through the vinyards of Alsace.
Each village in Alsace has a unique church steeple. We finally arrived in Colmar.

Here I am in Colmar.
Eric Hadley-Ives, standing in front of some painted Christmas trees. It was already the 20th of November, but these roses in Colmar were thriving.

We spent some of the afternoon in the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, where we admired these old casks.
When we left the museum, the sun was setting behind the overcast skies, and the light was growing dim.

I saw Santa Claus or Father Christmas or Saint Nicholas walking in Colmar.

There was a special exhibit of drawings by Martin Schongauer (d. 1491), including this Griffin. Here Saint George is defeating the monster in the desert of North Africa (painted by a person who had never seen a desert)
A curious work depicting the hunt for crocodiles, with pigs used as bait. This work dates to the 1600s or early 1700s.

Here is poor Saint Anthony enduring the abuse of all sorts of awful and horrible things (from the Isenheim Altarpiece). This is a detail (from the Isenheim Altarpiece) of the Temption of Saint Anthony.

A statue of the female personification of the ideal of liberty and freedom. Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) was from Colmar, so this statue is in Colmar. A carving of Saint Sebastian, probably from the upper Rhine area, and dating back to the 1470s. Saint John the Evangelist, a sculpture from around 1500, carved in the region of the upper Rhine (which includes Alsace).

This is a revolutionary scene made by Jean-Jacques Karpff dit Casimir (1770-1829). This depicts the Civic Oath. Liberty, this image has words of the French Revolution in German. Another vision of the female personification of the ideals of freedom and liberty, and the French Republic.

Kientzheim under the moon. A stream flowing through the village of Kientzheim. After leaving Colmar, we stopped at a winery in Kientzheim. This mushroom was a decoration in the window.

While my new friends were tasting wine I took a walk through Kientzheim, admiring the old buildings in the moonlight. A street in the village of Kientzheim. The Kientzheim church.

When I was flying to Strasbourg my flight schedule took me through the Amsterdam airport, where I was amazed by the beautiful holiday decorations. Here is a Dutch Christmas tree in the Amsterdam Airport. On my way home from Strasbourg I had some time in Paris at the De Gaulle airport, where I admired these French bags in a botique near my gate.
