Description with more detail

  Day 1 Saturday

Get a flight from Asia to Chicago. Due to the International Date Line crossing, you will arrive in Chicago around the same time on the same date that you departed Asia. Most flights arrive in the late morning. You can take the Chicago Mass Transit from the airport to a hotel in the downtown area.

Try to stay awake until at least 6:00 or 7:00 p.m., as you will be tired from the flight. Walk around downtown Chicago after checking into your hotel.

Consult the bidding list here to use Priceline to get a good deal on a hotel in Chicago.

Use Priceline’s name your own price function to bid for a 4-star hotel in the downtown area for about $75-$85 (in 2012, about 16-18 Myrftis), and your offer will probably be accepted by a good hotel that will be within a short walk of a mass transit train.

First night in a Chicago hotel.

  Day 2 Sunday

Day in Chicago. You may have jet lag, and usually coming from Asia this means you will be active in the morning, but want to sleep in the afternoon and early evening. Try to stay up to six or seven in the evening. Perhaps just do one major thing. In Chicago, the major museums and sights include:

Art Institute of Chicago
Field Museum
Shedd Aquarium
Museum of Science and Industry
Willis Tower (Skydeck Chicago)
Brookfield Zoo
Baha'i Temple

The mass transit system can get you to the Baha’i Temple, but it is fairly far away from downtown. You can take a bus to the Museum of Science and Industry. It’s not as easy to use public transportation to get to the Brookfield Zoo, but the Lincoln Park Zoo, which is downtown, is free (but also quite small). The museums downtown, within walking distance of the main area, include the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Art Institute of Chicago. The Chicago History Museum is also downtown, and it is quite interesting.

Second night in your Chicago hotel.
  Day 3 Monday

Another morning in Chicago, but after lunch (around 1:00 p.m.) head over to the Union Station in downtown Chicago, as your train departs at 2:15 p.m. for Saint Paul, Minnesota. The Skydeck Chicago is very close to the train station, so if you do one thing this morning, you may want to do that.. You will arrive in Saint Paul quite late at night, around 10:30 p.m. if the train is on time. The train to Saint Paul will travel through Wisconsin, which has lovely scenery.

A bid of $70 on Priceline for a three star or four star hotel in St. Paul should get something good near the train station. You may take a taxi from the train station to your hotel.

Hotel in Saint Paul, MN
  Day 4 Tuesday

You have the day in Saint Paul / Minneapolis to look around. If your hotel lets you store your luggage at the hotel, that will be good; otherwise, take it to a locker at the train station. Your train for West Glacier departs at 11:15 p.m.

In Saint Paul the main attractions that you can see near downtown include:

The State Capitol
The Cathedral of Saint Paul
James J. Hill House
Science Museum of Minnesota

Roomette on the train to West Glacier, Montana
Day 5 Wednesday You spend this whole day on the train, so this is a day to relax, read books and magazines, and admire the scenery of North Dakota and Montana. The scenery will be mostly the grasslands of the northern high plains. Certainly in the evening the scenery will be nice, as you pass through high mountains. You arrive at West Glacier (if on schedule) around 8:30 p.m., and your hotel is in walking distance from the train station.
Belton Chalet in West Glacier, Montana
Day 6 Thursday There is a tour of Glacier National Park leaving from West Glacier at 8:00 a.m., returning around 5:00 p.m. You could take this tour either today or tomorrow. Probably today is the best day for the tour. Belton Chalet in West Glacier, Montana
Day 7 Friday You have this day to go back into Glacier National Park and take a hike or do whatever you like. Perhaps you would like to go for a horseback trail ride. Your train on to Portland, Oregon will arrive in West Glacier at about 8:24 p.m. (if it is on schedule), and you spend the night on the train to Portland. Roomette on the train to Portland, Oregon.
  Day 8 Saturday

Arrive in Portland around 10:15 a.m. (if the train is on schedule), and go to your hotel. You have the rest of the day in Portland.

Major attractions in Portland include:
The Chinese garden.
The Japanese garden.
The Science Museum.
The Art Museum.

Portland, Oregon.
Day 9 Sunday A full day in Portland, Oregon.
If you want to see some more of the countryside around Portland you could take a day tour out of the city, as there are tours to Mt. Hood and the Volcano Park at Mount Saint Helens. You could also take a day tour to the Oregon Wine Country and the Oregon Coast. But, Portland is a nice city, and you could certainly enjoy a full day staying in town.
Portland, Oregon.
Day 10 Monday In the morning you can continue your exploration of Portland. In the afternoon return to the train station. Your train departs at 2:25 p.m. Spend the rest of the day on the train admiring the scenery as your train heads south through the Willamette Valley with the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Coastal Range to the west. Train headed toward the San Francisco Bay area.
Day 11 Tuesday Arrive in Oakland, California at 8:50 a.m.. While Oakland has plenty to see, and some good lodging options, you may prefer to relocate to Berkeley or Albany for the night, or even cross the San Francisco Bay on mass transit to get a hotel in San Francisco. There is a ferry terminal with boats to the main port in San Francico next to the train station in Jack London Square (in Oakland).
If you stay in Oakland, you probably should go to the California Museum, which isn’t too far from the train station.
Hotel in San Francisco or Oakland or nearby.
  Day 12 Wednesday

A full day in San Francisco.
You should go to the Golden Gate Park and visit the California Academy of Sciences and the de Young Art Museum in the park. The Botanical Gardens and the Japanese Tea Garden are also worth seeing. Chinatown is worth a visit as well.

Second night in San Francisco or Oakland or nearby.
Day 13 Thursday The train from Oakland (Jack London Square) departs at 8:50 a.m. for San Luis Obispo. You arrive there at 3:07 p.m. Stay at the Hostel Obispo (less than $100) or The Garden Street Inn (over $200). Hotel in San Luis Obispo
  Day 14 Friday

Take a morning tour of San Simeon and Hearst Castle. Probably take the San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority bus from downtown San Luis Obispo (Route #12) at 6:33 a.m. out to Moro Bay (arrive at 6:58 a.m.), and then from Moro Bay the connecting bus (Route #15 Northbound) departs Moro Bay at 7:02 am. and arrives at the Hearst Castle at 7:54 a.m.. The visitor center opens at 8:00 a.m. and the first tour of Hearst Castle is at 9:00 a.m., so take the first tour, and then hang out at the Hearst Castle for a while, getting back to the visitor center by 10:50 a.m., because the bus back to Moro Bay leaves the visitor center at 11:00 a.m., gets to Moro Bay at 11:55 a.m., and then the bus to San Luis Obispo departs at 12:08 p.m., getting to the Government Center in San Luis Obispo at 12:30 p.m. Your train to San Diego departs at 1:35 p.m.

You spend the afternoon and evening on the Surfliner train, arriving in San Diego at 10:15 p.m.

San Diego, California.

Second night in San Diego.
Day 16 Sunday Most of the day is in San Diego. You catch a train to Los Angeles at 2:40 p.m., and this will arrive in Los Angeles at 5:40 p.m. In Los Angeles you switch over to the train that departs at 6:15 p.m. for Chicago, although you are only going as far as Albuquerque. These are your seventh and eighth segments on the rail pass, and the rail pass expires tomorrow anyway. Roomette on Southwest Chief on the way to Albuquerque.

Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Day 18 Tuesday Full day in Albuquerque. Second night in Albuquerque.

Notes on some transportation on this trip

Day of travel. Travel description Distance Duration of travel
Day 2 Arriving in the Chicago airport at the international terminal, you take a free airport train to the domestic terminals, and from there walk to the mass transit station, to get a mass transit train to downtown Chicago. Once arriving in downtown Chicago, you can either walk to your hotel from the nearest mass transit station or take a taxi for the short distance. While in Chicago you can use taxis, mass transit trains, or city busses to get around, although it is perfectly possible to walk to four or five of the main attractions near the downtown area.
Day 3 Ride the Empire Builder Amtrak Train (Chicago to Seattle/Portland) as far as Saint Paul, Minnesota
Day 4 Ride the Empire Builder Amtrak Train (Chicago to Seattle/Portland) from Saint Paul, Minnesota to West Glacier, Montana (arriving on the day five)
Day 6 Take a tour on a tour bus, and use shuttle busses to get around between West Glacier and points in Glacier National Park.
Day 7 Ride the Empire Builder Amtrak Train (Chicago to Seattle/Portland) from West Glacier, Montana to Portland, Oregon (arriving on the day eight)
Day 8 In Portland use mass transit and public busses to get around the city.

Notes about the costs.

I use dollars for the year I research costs and then convert those dollars into Myrfti units. A Myrfti is a sort of inflation-adjusted price. If you have 100 Myrfti, you have 1% of the median year-round full-time American worker's wage/salary. So, if the median year-round full-time American worker earns $50,000, a Myrfti is equal to $5, and 100 Myrfti are $500.

The dollar prices will soon be out-of-date, but the Myrfti prices should be close to what you would pay in any year. Just find the most recent median full-time year-round income for American workers, and divide that by 10,000 to find what 1 Myrfti is worth. Then, once you have that figure, multiply it times the Myrfti costs to get an estimate for the current dollar price of the trip.

There are different ways to find the year-round full-time income used to calculate the Myrfti. One way is to take median weekly wages and multiply by 52. Using this method, in 2011 the median year-round full-time income was $39,312 (this comes from Highlights of Women's Earnings in 2011[pdf] from the U.S. Department of Labor, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, report 1038 issued in October of 2012. Specifically, I looked at Table 1 Median usual weekly earnings of full-time wage and salary workers, where the median weekly earnings for both sexes, total, 16 years and older is reported as $756. I have multiplied that median weekly earning by 52 to reach an estimate for the year-round worker

But some percentage of full-time workers who are surveyed to calculate the median weekly full-time wage are not year-round workers. Once you understand that a significant percentage of full-time workers at any given week are going to have some unemployment experience, or might retire, or might be in seasonal employment so that they take some time off without income, then you realize that the weekly median full-time wage is going to underestimate the annual year-round full-time income.

What is the median year-round full-time worker’s actual wage? In one government document I found that in 2010 the median year round full-time male worker earned $47,715. I have also read elsewhere that in 2011 the median year-round worker earned about $49,500, which implies that the median year-round male worker must have earned significantly more, perhaps $54,000 or so.

Those 2010 and 2011 numbers can’t both be right, because wages didn’t grow that strongly between 2010 and 2011. It’s not plausible that men who had year-round full-time employment got raises of about 14% between 2010 and 2011. For many of these Myrfti calculations I researched between 2009-2011 I use $49,500 as my Myrfti figure for median year-round full-time workers, but that number is probably too high. In some other trips I used $40,000 as the Myrfti figure, but that is probably too low. At any rate, these numbers are only off by a few percentage points.

Day 1 The flights are the main expense. In 2012, flights out of most Chinese cities to Chicago run about $2,200 to $2,400 (round-trip), and take 21 to 26 hours (stops in Beijing or Seoul or Shanghai between the two cities). From Hong Kong, Beijing, Taipei, or Seoul, costs can be between $1,950 and $2,200. From Manilla, prices run $1,700-$2,200.

The costs for admissionsand & tours in Glacier National Park, Portland, San Francisco - Oakland, San Luis Obispo - San Simeon, San Diego, Albuquerque, Kansas City, Saint Louis, & Springfield are not calculated out individually on this page, but should average somewhere between the costs of long stays in expensive cities (Chicago at 29 Myrftis per person) and short stays in inexpensive cities (Saint Paul at 6 Myrftis per person).

Adding in costs for day transport passes and taxies to the admissions and tour estimated costs gets us to about 190 Myrftis for two persons, or 95 Myrftis per person for the whole trip.

Total cost of this four week vacation for someone from Asia would be about $11,550 in 2012. This is about 24.2% of what the median full-time year-round male American worker earned. Assuming a person in Asia earns about half of what an American earns, this trip would cost about 48% of what a typical middle-class Asian earns in a year (and if we assume the average Asian earns about a quarter of what a median American worker earns, this trip represents about a year’s salary). Assuming an Asian person earns half what an American earns, and saves about 5% of their income each month to pay for this trip, and assuming their savings slightly beat inflation, then after about 100 months, or 9 years, they would have saved enough to afford this trip for two persons.

    Comments

This trip covers a lot of what is best about the western United States. There are stays in some of the big cities of the Midwest (Saint Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Kansas City). There are visits to big cities on the Pacific Coast (Portland, the San Francisco Bay area and San Diego). And, there are two nights in the Southwest (in Albuquerque). There are stays in a couple small cities (San Louis Obispo and Springfield, Illinois). There is one visit to a national park (Glacier National park in Montana). And, there are many days to admire the scenery of the United States from the windows of the train.

An advantage of this trip is that no one has to drive anywhere. Trains and public transit will get you where you need to go.
