Abstract painting by Arthur Arthur's Abstract from 2000 Arthur's drawing of friendly chicks
When Arthur was very young he enjoyed painting. Here are various shapes and colors he made. Arthur started enjoying painting when he was about 18 months old. This painting is from November 10, 2000, when he was about 19 months old. Arthur drew this when he was two, and he described what each object was. Jeri wrote labels on the figures. Over a year later, when Arthur was almost four years-old, and hadn't seen the drawing for ten or eleven months, we asked him what the figures were, and he identified all of them without hesitation, as if it were obvious. He couldn't read yet, so Jeri's labels weren't giving him cues. We tried this was some other narrative drawings, and he easily could identify all the objects, even ones that looked like mere scribbles to me.
  Arthur March 2001 Arthur's Happy Mother's Day Arthur 2003
This is not an abstract drawing. It has representative figures in it. Arthur drew this on March 3, 2001, over a month before his second birthday. As a three-year-old he was able to identify objects in the drawing, and his identifications matched the labels Jeri had written on the drawing at the time he made it. Arthur's Mother's Day card from 2004 shows the Hadley-Ives family. Arthur's drew this on November 4th, 2003.
January 21st 2001 abstract by Arthur Arthurs drawing from May 7th of 2001 Abstract drawing by Arthur
This is not an abstract scribble. Arthur identifed objects in this work, so this is a representative drawing. He made it on January 21st, 2001. He was 21 months old. Here is an a drawing Arthur made on May 7, 2001, when he was a young two-year-old. A year later, and then two years later, he was still able to identify figures and objects, interpreting what they were just as he had explained when he first drew it (Jeri labeled the figures, but he still couldn't read them). Arthur drew this on December 17, 2001. He was a little older than two-and-a-half. He was developing skills in drawing straight lines.
Arthur's drawing from March of 2004 Arthur's Cartoon Scene Arthur's Map
A drawing Arthur made in March of 2004, when he was still four years old. Arthur drew smiles on figures in his drawings. Arthur's drawing of a map.
Untitled Abstract painting by Arthur A dark painting by Arthur Prints made wtih dinosaur shapes
An abstract painting. Arthur was intersted in colors, and didn't care if the paper became dark with his paints. Arthur's paintings sometimes got the colors muddled and dark in the middle, with brighter colors around the edges. Arthur's prints made in dinosaur shapes.
