June 8th: Dandong and the War Museum.

We walked along the river and went out into the river across the border with North Korea on the old Japanese bridge that Americans had bombed during the Korean War. We visited the Korean War Museum. Then, we took a train overnight to Bei'An.

The train stopped with a sudden jerk and a hard breaking. I had the feeling that something bad had happened. Indeed, a 7-year-old child had been struck and killed by the train. This was in a little village, and these people came out to stand near the train. After waiting for the train crew and villagers to clear the track, we began to continue our way. This woman (in the lower right) was running through the village to come to the scene. I wonder if it was the child’s mother or a relative or neighbor. I think these were some people who helped out after the accident. I did not see the relatives crying over the body of the child, but these persons would have perhaps witnessed the accident and helped out after the child was struck by the train. This monument was near the tracks near the village where the child was killed. Incidently, late at night, after departing Heilongjiang but before getting near Beian, another person was on the track, but this was an attempted suicide. The engineer was able to stop the train and avoid killing the suicidal man, even though he jumped in front of the train twice.
